Queens County Courts
Queens County is part of the 11th Judicial District of New York and is home to three Supreme Courts, a Family Court, and a Surrogate’s Court. The Supreme Court is the county’s highest trial court with unlimited jurisdiction over civil, criminal, and divorce cases. The Family Court adjudicates juvenile and domestic relations cases, while the Surrogate Court specializes in probate matters. Both courts share jurisdiction in adoption proceedings.
Additionally, because Queens County coexists as a borough in New York City, the New York City Civil and Criminal Courts also operate in the county. The New York City Civil Court handles civil claims of up to $50,000, small claims not exceeding $10,000, and landlord-tenant matters. Queens County Criminal Records
Record seekers can obtain Queens County criminal records from several criminal justice agencies in the county. Many of these records, including arrests, warrants, criminal history, and jail records, are open to the public pursuant to New York State’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). However, there are exceptions to public disclosure of Queens criminal records; records containing juvenile information, sealed records, and expunged marijuana records are not publicly available.
The New York City Police Department and Sheriff’s Office in Queens County are the primary law enforcement agencies in Queens County. Although both agencies can make arrests, the Sheriff is responsible for civil law enforcement. Get Queens County Civil Court Records
Civil court records refer to official documents and information on civil cases such as contract disputes, torts, disputes over land, and monetary claims. Where to obtain these records in Queens County depends on the court that heard such cases. The civil records of the Supreme Court are in the custody of the Queens County Clerk, while other civil courts in the county have clerks who maintain case records. Queens County Dissolution of Marriage Records
In Queens County, divorce decrees and other documents generated in cases of dissolution of marriage are maintained by the office of the County Clerk. These records are considered confidential. As such, only the parties to the case and their attorneys can access them. However, for foreign use, the first copy costs $35, while each additional copy costs $30. On the other hand, the New York State Department of Health maintains Queens County divorce records. Queens County Property Records
